World Cup Accommodation BordeauxCheap Hotels in Bordeaux for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France
Ireland, Australia, Canada, Japan, Georgia, Namibia all play games in Bordeaux in September in this year's Rugby World Cup. Look for budget accommodation early
Bordeaux is one of France's most beautiful cities at any time of year, and this wine-loving city knows how to have a good time. Its bi-annual Festival of Wine is a real wine-lovers' party, and at any time of year there are queues of visitors at the Bordeaux Tourist Information Office booking tickets for tours of the Bordeaux wine region. There are expensive deluxe 5-star hotels, chic and boutique hotels, and cheap budget options too. But when the 2007 Rugby World Cup arrives in Bordeaux in September, accommodation will be fully booked. Cheap hotels in France tend to be much better than cheap hotels in some other countries. You can find good standards in 2- and 3-star accommodation, and even some 1-star hotels provide clean and comfortable rooms with most of the amenities. Here are some personal recommendations for some excellent but less expensive Bordeaux hotel options. * Acanthe Hotel12-14 rue St-Remi The Acanthe might only be a 2-star hotel but you would never guess it, as the images below show. It is just off the place de la Bourse, one of the finest squares in the whole of Europe, and surrounded by great eating places, cafés and bars. You'll get your sleep, though, as the street is quiet and the hotel is double-glazed. Superb budget hotel. * Hotel Bristol14 ter place Gambetta You won't find a better choice – or price - than this as it's just off the very central place Gambetta, where there might be big screens set up for the World Cup. It's also only a short stroll to the city's other main squares, where the partying and big screens will definitely be found. Rooms in this 2-star hotel are simple but clean, and as a result it does book up well ahead. * Hotel Continental10 rue Montesquieu Smack in the most beautiful central district of Bordeaux, the so-called Golden Triangle, is this 18th-century mansion whose rooms are a real bargain. They are slightly small, as are the bathrooms, but some of the rooms have balconies and you won't be spending too much time in your room in Bordeaux anyway, will you? Certainly the cheap price is right, a great budget hotel choice. * Hotel Royal Medoc3-5 rue de Seze See the description below for the Hotel du Seze. These are adjoining sister hotels, both equally comfortable, both equally inexpensive. * Hotel du Seze7 rue de Seze Just behind the esplanade des Quinconces, where the big-screen rugby action will be taking place, in one of Bordeaux's most historic districts, the Seze manages to be both stylish and budget at the same time. It's housed in an 18th-century mansion, and is highly recommended. Sister hotel to the Medoc, its neighbour. * Hotel Studio26, rue Huguerie Sister hotel of the Bristol and just as central, close to the place Tourny in a nice part of the city. It's even cheaper, being only a 1-star hotel, but don't be put off as these hotels are well run and guests keep returning. As the name suggests, this hotel has some smaller studio rooms at bargain prices. * 2007 RUGBY WORLD CUP FIXTURES FOR BORDEAUXStade Chaban-Delmas Sep 9 Ireland vs Namibia Sep 15 Ireland vs Georgia Sep 25 Canada vs Japan Sep 29 Australia vs Canada * For other suggestions for hotels in Bordeaux, as recommended in the Official Travel Guide to the 2007 Rugby World Cup, click here. *
