The Bal du Moulin Rouge in Montmartre in the Parisian red-light district needs little introduction especially after the 2001 film, Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. While the cinematographic experience left audiences dazzled and earned two Oscars after having been nominated for eight - nothing beats the real deal. You need to be there in order to have your senses abducted by the spellbinding performances and you need to saturate yourself in the legendary ambience to be infused with the magic of Moulin Rouge. Short History of the Moulin RougeOn 6 October 1889 Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler opened the Moulin Rouge which saw the birth of the Quadrille Realiste performed mainly by amateurs such as seamstresses and maids. This energetic dance soon became famous as the French Cancan which is still performed today. The cabaret has also seen an array of revues performed over the years such asRêve d'Égypte and La Revue de la Femme in 1907, Revue Amoureuse in 1910 and the renowned Mistinguett show in 1925. Robert Hartman was responsible for transforming the ballroom into a nightclub in 1937 which was considered ultra-modern at that stage. French singers Edith Piaf and Yves Montand performed at the Moulin Rouge in 1944 and on 23 November 1981 closes its doors to perform exclusively for Queen Elizabeth II. Since 1928 a total of six movies entitled Moulin Rouge were made and it was also immortalised in the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec. Interesting Facts About the Show FéerieFéerie was first performed on 23 December 1999 by more than 100 artists including 60 Doriss Girls who were recruited internationally. A total of seven million Euros were invested in the creation of Féerie which attracts 600 000 spectators per year. The show is the brainchild of Doris Haug and Ruggero Angeletti and is performed twice every night, every day of the year. The performers wear 1000 costumes of feathers, rhinestones and sequins and also strutt around in 800 pairs of fabulous custom made shoes. The Show FéerieInitially the topless dancers might seem distracting but their partial nudity is soon overshadowed by their scintillating performance. The show is divided into four main parts which include: the Moulin Rouge today, yesterday and forever, 'sandokan' which shows the adventures of a pirate in Indonesia, the Circus as well as the Moulin Rouge's history from the 1900's until today. The bright colours, captivating moves and inviting music effortlessly hypnotise the senses and you may even wonder if a mind-altering substance had been slipped into your French champagne. One of the most impressive parts of the show is when a brave women dives into a giant aquarium that holds 40 tons of water as well as five massive pythons. The woman fearlessly twists and twirls her body between these creatures to the sheer amazement of the audience. The show lasts about two hours and the chances are good that you will feel tired afterwards as the enchanting performances are so believable that you will feel more like a participator than a spectator. If you only want to see the show it will cost you between 89 and 99 Euros per person which also includes half a bottle of champagne.
