Visiting the Village des BoriesA morning or afternoon spent exploring the unique shaped residences of an ancient era is a cultural treat for those visiting Provence. The word "Borie" is used to describe the Gallic huts, which showcase the lifestyle of those who once lived in them. At reception, visitors will receive a map of the village, highlighting each hut and its function. A sheep pen, wine cellar, goat pen, oven, barn, family dwelling, storage, and pigsty can all be found in the village. Each borie gives the visitor an idea of how the people of this region lived, and by entering the stone doorway, can imagine what it would be like to live this way. The architectural design of each borie is a puzzle in itself, as no mortar was ever used in their construction. The huts were built using a corbel vault system, in which each stone is placed in a way that creates a natural arch and gradually balances out on top to reveal a home made entirely of dry stone. Near the entrance, visitors will discover a two story stone house that holds pictures of bories from around the world as well as further information on the architectural wonders. A trip to the Village des Bories takes just a short time, yet the igloo shaped stone huts and their history will leave a lasting impression with all who explore them.
