The well preserved historical center of Sarlat la Caneda is situated in the Dordogne Valley. This south of France city has historical attractions and upscale hotels.

Sarlat la Canéda, situated in the heart of the Dordogne valley, is a worthwhile stop in the South of France. Family vacations in the city are common for exploring the accessible, historically preserved center and many impressive sites. It’s a tourist friendly spot surrounded by gorgeous countryside.

The tale of Sarlat is said to have begun in the Gallo-Roman times. Prosperity came in the 8th century but was short lived after being taken over by Cluny and then the Holy See in Rome.

After being taken over yet again by the English during the hundred year war (1360), Sarlat was again returned to France by the Connétable du Guesclin. But it would have to survive the Wars of Religion and the exactions of the Chevalier de Vivan and Vicomte de Turenne before settling into peaceful times with the rule of Henry IV.

Sarlat la Canéda

Prospering during the past 3 centuries lead to an uneventful time that lasted 150 years. Within the last 30 years and the building of roads to the city, the inhabitants now don’t rely on river and train transport, keeping the community thriving. Combined with the law of Malraux in 1962, the city received funding to restore the central area to its previous beauty.

Dordogne Valley Historical Sites

A walking tour should start near the center at La Cathédrale Sainte-Sacerdos. The original structure to the west, which was part of the Benedictine abbey, dates from the 12th century. Large reconstruction was also done in the 16th and 17th centuries. The interior has some gorgeous panels and statues and the organ was made by the well-known J.F. Lépine. Behind the cathedral is the remains of the 14th century Romanesque Cloister.

Following the streets east and then north, tourists will discover the Cour des Fontaines, which was used by the abbey and where water still runs today; the Lanterne des Morts, the origins of which are a story not fully believed; Le Présidal, which was the seat of royal justice under Henry II and now serves as a lovely restaurant; and many 17th and 18th century mansions with wrought iron balconies. Note that at the Maison Vienne, or Maleville, an interesting political artist, Adrian Kenyon, can be found at the very top of the tower. It’s also a wonderful chance to see the interior of the mansion.

At the Place du Peyrou, make sure to look north to see the birthplace of Etienne de la Boëtie, the poet and humanist. The house is Italian Renaissance and has carved mullion windows that are framed with pilasters of decorated medallions.

Hotels Sarlat

By far the most charming accommodation in the city, Clos la Boëtie is a converted 19th century mansion with 11 rooms to stay in, some with private terraces. This 4 star hotel boasts an elegant interior, private garden, fitness center, and all the amenities of a luxury hotel.

If you are looking for a less lavish stay, try the Hôtel de Selves, which shares the inner courtyard and pool with la Boëtie. This 3 star accommodation offers tranquil rooms for individuals, groups and all-inclusive options.

Where to Eat

Near both hotels is Le Bistro de l’Octroi, a fine establishment for both lunch and dinner. The service is excellent and the food outstanding. Make sure to book a table on the terrace for the evening, as it fills up quickly. Also nearby is Les Tulipes. Specializing in pancakes, crêpes and salads, this unique diner is well priced and pleasant. The cafés around Place de la Liberté are all casual eateries great for lunch and for people watching the bustling foot traffic of Sarlat.
