Australia, South Africa, the USA, Fiji and Samoa all play matches in Montpellier in the Rugby World Cup 2007, and the city's hotels ranges from 5-star luxury to budget
In a recent survey in France, Montpellier came top of the list of places where people said they would like to live. It's got a lovely old centre, with huge pedestrian areas, lots of big open places, lively squares with bars, cafes and restaurants, and a very young student population. It's a big sporting city too, and for the 2007 Rugby World Cup the USA play two matches here, and the Australian team are using Montpellier as their base. South Africa, Samoa and Fiji play here too, and with four matches from 12-30 September, there's going to be a big demand for hotel rooms so start looking now. Here are a few Montpellier hotel recommendations, from the chic and boutique to the cheap and budget options.

Everyone in the city knows this address, as it's not only the most stylish 4-star hotel in the city, with just 12 rooms, it's also got Montpellier's best restaurant, boasting three Michelin stars. For rugby fans who like their food and comfort, Le Jardin des Sens can't be bettered. One of the rooms even has its own private pool, although there's another pool for everyone else.

You won't find a better location than this, in the medieval old heart of Montpellier on a pedestrianised street. Inside there are 36 wonderfully comfortable rooms, all individually designed. Ask for an upper room with a view over Montpellier. The Guilhem also has a private garden dining room for breakfast.

Perfectly placed inbetween the old town and the amazingly futuristic Antigone quarter of Montpellier, which has to be seen to be believed. The 3-star Mercure has 120 rooms, its own bar and restaurant, and a lovely breakfast terrace too. It's rather more stylish than the average Mercure or other business hotel, reflecting Montpellier's stylish qualities.

Despite the street address, this is right on the place de la Comedie, Montpellier's main square, and some rooms overlook it. All 44 rooms are soundproofed, and location-wise it's perfect with easy access to the old town and to the central tram stop, where you can catch the tram right out to the stadium.

This is a cheaper 2-star option, a little north of the city centre but easily reached by foot or on Montpellier's excellent modern tram system. The Parc also has its own parking, which is a real bonus if you're driving. The 20 rooms are modern and stylish, but the building itself is an 18th-century Languedoc mansion.
