Affordable Lodging in an Old 1888 Mexican Style Villa in Provence

The Hotel Azteca is a converted 19th century Mexican villa. Other than its charm, its services and location make it an ideal choice for a vacation or business meeting.

A long iron gate guards the entrance to a quiet garden surrounding a paved courtyard. If it were not for the painted lines marking a few of the parking spots, I would have thought I was entering a private residence.

A staircase leads up to the glass entry doors and into a small foyer with reception desk. Off to the right lies the salon where you can order Mexican tapa-type appetizers in the evening or breakfast in the morning. Breakfast choices range from a simple drink, croissant and fruit to a full continental meal.

Location of the Azteca in Barcelonette

It is located just a few short steps from Place Manuel but on the outskirts of the main center. It benefits from the quiet of the neighborhood yet is close to the services offered by the many restaurants and bars at Place Manuel. In winter, there is a free bus that will take skiers to either Pra-Loup or Sauze.

Boutique Hotel Azteca

Most of the 27 rooms have double French doors that lead to a small balcony overlooking garden or mountain views. Every room comes with its own bathroom, either with a bathtub or shower. Other amenities include a color TV, direct line phones with voice mail and WIFI. A small bar/refrigerator and safe are also at your disposal.

There is no restaurant on-site at the Azteca Hotel. They offer a half-pension plan in connection with some of the restaurants in town. However, they can arrange for evening room service if you specifically ask. There is a breakfast plan and evening appetizers, Mexican style.

A 1291sq.ft room is available for business meetings or receptions and there is free private parking available and a covered carport suitable for motorbikes and bikes. The gate is locked at 9pm but each guest is supplied with an entry code at check-in.

Pricing varies according to the season, choice of room and number of guests per room. There are economy rooms (without a view), Traditional rooms, Traditional superior, Duplex and Suite with Mexican decor. Depending on your choice, a room can range from 59 euro to 130 euro.

For those visiting by motorbike, the covered parking will be of particular interest. Also, the premises are off the main road which makes entering and exiting by bike much easier and safer. The hotel is a member of a motorcycle club which perhaps is a benefit for groups. The rooms are spacious and clean and simply decorated. You will not miss an on-site restaurant as they really are a stone's throw away.
