Paris is a city of iconic landmarks, the Eiffel Tower , Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur dominate the skyline. Use this quick guide to getting to these and other famous sights.
Paris is a relatively small and compact city where most of the famous landmarks, except Sacre Coeur, are close to each other. Two underground railway systems serve central Paris. The world famous Metro has 14 lines with stops in near to all major attractions. The RER serves theoutlying suburbs and has fewer stops in the city, but is useful for some attractions. Sacré CoeurSet on a hill, in the north Paris suburb of Montmartre, Sacre Coeur is a magnet for tourists. Visit the church, sit with the crowds outside and admire the best free view of the city or watch the street artists at work in the cobbled back streets of Montmartre. Nearest Metro/ RER Anvers (Line 2) Notre DameSet on the Ile de la Cité , an island in the middle of the Seine, Notre Dame Cathedral has dominated the Paris skyline for centuries. After touring the cathedral cross the bridge to the smaller Ile St Louis and explore the narrow streets full of small shops and sample the world famous Berthillon's ice cream. Nearest Metro/RER Cité (Line 4) St Michel Notre Dame (RER B and C) LouvreView world famous old masters, including the Mona Lisa, admire the stunning architecture, debate whether the modern glass pyramid at the front of the building is a work of art or a monstrosity. After that, visit the underground shops and restaurant that are included in the Louvre complex or enjoy the sunshine and wander aimlessly through the Tulieries Gardens. Nearest Metro/RER Palais du Louvre (Lines 1 and 7) Museé d'Orsay A converted railway station is home to Paris's second largest art collection. See the works of Gauguin, Cézanne, Van Gogh , Monet or Renoir and admire world class displays of photographs, sculpture and graphic arts. The museum is very popular with tourists but is usually not as busy and hectic as the Louvre. Nearest Metro/RER Solférino (Line 12) Museé d'Orsay (RER C) Champs d' Élysees Mingle with the crowds along Paris's most famous street, call in at shops ranging from top designer names to Virgin Megastores and Disney. Enjoy a coffee in a street café, under the shadow of the magnificent l'arc de Triomphe. Nearest Metro/RER Charles de Gaulle Etoile (Line 1, 2 and6) (RER A) Eiffel TowerParis's best known landmark can be seen from most parts of the city. Elevators take visitors to three viewing platforms, including one near the top of the tower which offers unparalleled views of the city and surrounding countryside. For the energetic, the first two levels, where there is a selection of restaurants and gift shops, are also accessible by climbing the stairs . Nearest Metro/RER Bir-Hakeim (Line 6) , Champs de Mars (RER C) Bateaux-Mouches River TripSee all the major sights of Paris on an hour-long river trip along the Seine. Experience the romance of the city as the trip passes The Louvre, Notre Dame and the Eifell Tower. Early evening is the most popular time to take this trip, which runs daily throughout the year. Between April and September trips depart from Pont d'Alma, within easy walking distance of the Eiffel Tower every 20 minutes between 4pm and 11pm. Services in winter, and before 4pm in summer, are less frequent. Nearest Metro/RER Alma Marceau (Line 9) , Pont d'Alma (RER C) Jardin de LuxembourgThe Luxembourg Palace and its gardens is a popular destination for locals and tourists. The park on the left bank of the river near the Latin Quarter and Sorbonne University was the inspiration to many writers and academics, including Ernest Hemingway. The park and gardens have something for all ages including children's play areas, exhibitions, open air concerts and a waiter served outdoor tea garden. Nearest Metro/RER Odeon (Lines 4 and 10), Luxembourg (RER B) Place de VosgesParis's oldest square, which dates back to the 17th century, was home to Victor Hugo between 1832-1848. Number 6, where he lived, is now a museum in his memory and other building around the square provide cafes and gift shops for tourists, without detracting from the sense of history. Nearby, the narrow streets of the Marais district and the Picasso Museum are well worth a visit. Nearest Metro/RER Bastllle (Lines 1,5 and 8), St Paul (Line 1), Chmen Vert (Line 1) Disneyland ParisDepending on your age, this is likely to be top or bottom of your list of must sees. Disneyland Paris lies 15 miles east of Paris and is easily reached from central Paris by RER. Line A provides a regular link to Disneyland from Charles de Gaulle Etoile, Auber , Chatelet les Halles or Gare de Lyon. Journey times vary between 35 and 45 minutes.
