Tucked away in an unassuming corner of north Paris, Mama Shelter opened to fanfare in 2008 and deserves to stay on any self-respecting 'hip hotels Paris' list.
Created by the Trigano family, owners of Club Med, and French philosopher Cyril Aouizerate and designed by Philippe Starck, Mama Shelter has won the Hot List 2009 Conde Nast Traveller award as well as Top 50 Stylish Business Hotels in Wallpaper and Fortune. It’s an inexpensive place, with rooms from 79 Euro, all the more surprising considering the design pedigree. The cozy, funky communal areas include vintage sweets and crisps in cabinets, a cute take on the more traditional and, let’s face it, tacky vending machine. The reception area includes several Macs for visitors’ use, and wandering into the bar area, there are bookshelves crammed with second hand books for perusal. Don’t forget to look up either, half the fun is on the ceiling. Mama Shelter Hotel: This Big Mama Has 172 RoomsMama Shelter comes with five room size choices-La Mama, Mama Luxe, Mama Deluxe, Mama Terrace and Mama Suite. Rooms range from 15m2 to 35m2 , and have all usual comforts like minibar and ensuite bathroom. Even the smallest include some more unusual ones such as microwave, an IMAC with free wifi (itself a bit of a rarity in Paris) radio, TV and DVD facility and a small office area. The design is sleek, modern and minimalistic-one would expect nothing less from Philippe Starck. Quirky details in each of the 172 rooms provide a cheeky little wink of a cultural aside to discover and lends a personal touch to each room. Rooms at this stylish boutique Bagnolet hotel are frequently subject to price-saving special offers, it’s well worth checking their website www.mamashelter.com for the latest deals before booking. Night Mama. Eat Mama: Restaurant, Barbeque, Brunch and BarLike most hotels in Paris, Mama Shelter lays on a good spread. The dishes are simple favourites but well prepared and on sunny summer days mama breaks out the barbeque to enjoy skewers with a good glass of wine. Friday and Saturday nights see local and international live acts and DJs and other ‘happenings’. Your Mama: Mama Shelter ServicesParking, transport, meeting room, laundry room, babysitting, concierge, business corner with email, fax and photocopying services, shop and as if that wasn’t enough, Kiehls products in the bathrooms. Nice. Where’s Mama? Finding Mama ShelterThough slightly out-of-the-way at present, Bagnolet is tipped to be the newest Parisian hotspot, as nightlife continues to move east of rue Oberkampf. Located directly across from Parisian alternative venue La Fleche d'Or, Mama shelter is easily accessible from central Paris and CDG and Orly airports. 109 rue de Bagnolet 75020 Paris, France Metro lines: 2, Alexandre Dumas, 3, Gambetta and 9, Maraichers.
