Imagination has triumphed in the charming 18th-century Hotel Louis II, often to dramatic effect (how about pink satin bamboo wallpaper in the lavatory?).

About the Hotel

Even the smallest rooms in this hotel (some of which are cramped, with little storage space) have huge personality. Two of the hotel’s larger rooms have dazzling wraparound trompe-l'oeil pictures set into the timber frames. On the top floor, you can sleep under ancient sloping roof timbers in a long flower-papered room where lace bedcovers look very appropriate, and there's an old rustic armoire or a 1920s cheval glass in some of the top-floor rooms. One bathroom has brass taps and a yellow cockleshell basin, the other has an oval bath and burnished copper fittings.

Every room in the hotel is different which adds to the hotel’s inimitable feel; sheets are floral in colours to match the décor, bath/shower rooms are small but fully equipped.

Next morning, eat a generous and refined breakfast in the newly-clothed golden elegance of the hotel’s large salon with its magnificent fanning beams (and superb new double-sided curtains!) Gilt-framed mirrors, fine antiques and candelabras complete the picture.

On arriving at the hotel you will be enthusiastically welcomed by the manager, François Meynant, and his staff and properly cared for: attention to detail is essential and M. Meynant’s team tends to treat its hotel guests like visiting friends.

This hotel was named for Prince Louis II, the Grand Condé who fought so brilliantly first against, then for Sun King Louis XIV and retired in peace and wealth to Chantilly, surrounded by great writers and poets.
