Travelers to France can use buses, transfer services, and trains from Geneva Airport (GVA) in Switzerland when going to Lyon, Grenoble, Chamonix, and Alpine ski resorts.

Geneva International Airport (GVA) is conveniently located just minutes from downtown Genève on the Swiss-French border. Genève Cointrin Aéroport is used by both Switzerland and France allowing travelers to France to often avoid Swiss immigration and customs altogether. Direct buses, and transfer services are available from the airport to French destinations while rail travel require an easy transfer at Geneva’s downtown Genève Cornavin station.

  • Travelers requiring visas should note that with the exception of private cars, these transportation services do pass through Swiss territory and require travelers to clear Swiss immigration and customs both at the land border and at the airport.

By Train from Lyon, France to Geneva Airport in Switzerland

Lyon, depending on who is counting, is France’s second or third city. It is around 150 km (100 miles) from Geneva. Up to 11 trains connect Genève central station with Lyon in around two hours.

TGV trains are slightly faster but more expensive than TER trains and always require a reservation. Total traveling time from Lyon SNCF Station to Geneva Airport ranges from 1h59 to 2h25.

By Train or Aerocar Bus from Grenoble, France to Geneva Airport in Switzerland

Grenoble is similarly 150 km (almost 100 miles) from Geneva. Four trains per day connect Grenoble and Genève central station in 2h30. A further three Aerocar buses per day go directly to the airport but are generally significantly more expensive than the trains.

By Train or Bus to Chamonix / Mont Blanc, France to Geneva Airport in Switzerland

Around ten trains per day are available from near Europe’s highest mountain peak Mt Blanc and popular ski resort Chamonix to Geneva Airport. Multiple transfers are usually required with the total traveling time ranging from three to four hours.

A few buses per day go directly to Geneva Airport with traveling times ranging from as fast as 90 minutes to just over two hours.

By Train or Bus from French Villages in the Lake Geneva Region to the Airport

Several small towns in France are close to Geneva and generally have much cheaper hotel prices than are common in Geneva and Switzerland. Trains and buses bring these towns within easy reach of the airport, sights, businesses, and international organizations based in Geneva.

  • Annemasse can be reached up to twice per hour by Regional Express train in just less than an hour.
  • Bellegard can be reached up to twice per hour in around half an hour. TGV trains are best avoided as TGV trains require reservations, are more expensive, and hardly faster than regular trains on this short distance.

Aeroski Bus Transfer Services to French Ski Resorts from Geneva Airport in Switzerland

Bus transfer services are available from Geneva Airport in Switzerland to virtually all Alpine ski resorts in France. The service is known as Aeroski Bus and generally requires reservations, especially on the return route to Geneva Airport. (In contrast, Swiss ski resorts in the Geneva region can only be reached by train or private transfer services from Geneva Airport.)

  • If traveling by car, see Driving to Geneva Airport on ways to legally avoid Switzerland’s highway tax or, if desired, Swiss territory completely. Swiss trains give easy access to Geneva and other towns in Western Switzerland allowing both locals and foreign travelers to take advantage of the large number of cheap flights available from Geneva Airport to the rest of Europe.
