Getting to the Schlumpf vintage car collection of the French National Motor Museum at the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse in Alsace near Basel is easy by car or train.

The Cité de l’Automobile, National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection, is in the northwestern suburbs of Mulhouse in the Alsace region of France. This marvelous collection of vintage cars with over 120 Bugattis is easily reached by car or public transportation from many parts of France, Germany, and Switzerland. Opening hours are long and special discounts are available to children and families.

By Car to the Cité de l’Automobile, National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection

The Cité de l’Automobile, as befits a car museum, is easily reached by car and has a large parking lot. From the highway (Autoroute) A36 that passes through the northern suburbs of Mulhouse, take the exit for Mulhouse Centre and follow the brown signs for Musée de l’Auto.

Driving distances are from:

  • Strasbourg – 120 km / 80 miles
  • Colmar – 40 km / 25 miles
  • Basel (Switzerland) – 40 km / 25 miles
  • Zurich (Switzerland) – 120 km / 80 miles
  • Freiburg (Germany) – 60 km / 40 miles

The gates to the parking area open automatically and no entry ticket is given. However, an exit ticket is required – remember to buy it with the museum admission ticket or it is a long trek back to the ticket window when trying to exit the parking lot.

The National Motor Museum is proud to be a Michelin Green Guide three-star destination described as “Worth a Journey”. However, vintage car aficionados may agree with the claim that seeing the Schlumpf Collection is worth more than a journey.

By Public Transportation to Cité de l’Automobile, National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection

  • By Tram from Mulhouse Central Station to Musée de l’Auto

The Cité de l’Automobile is easily reached from Mulhouse Gare Central (Main Train Station) on tram line 1 in less than 10 minutes. The Musée de l’Auto stop is right at the entrance to the museum.

  • By Train to Mulhouse

Mulhouse is a stop on the TGV high-speed rail link between Strasbourg and Basel while slower and cheaper trains are also available to regional destinations.

Traveling times on the TGV to Mulhouse are 20 minutes from Basel, 1h20 from Zurich, 42 minutes from Strasbourg, and 3h10 from Paris Gare de l’Est. Traveling times on cheaper local trains are around 30 minutes from Basel or Colmar and an hour from Strasbourg. Travelers from Germany have to change trains in Basel or Strasbourg (Straßburg).

Opening Hours of the Cité de l’Automobile, National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection

The opening hours of the National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection are conveniently long with the museum closed only on December 25. Opening hours are generally from 10 am to 5 pm. However, on weekdays from early January to early February the museum is only open from 1 pm. From early April to early November, the museum is open until 6 pm.

Admission and Tickets for the Cité de l’Automobile, National Motor Museum – Schlumpf Collection

The full admission price for the National Motor Museum is currently €10.50 for adults and €8.10 for children and students over 7 years old – under 7s free. Families receive a fourth child ticket for free with any three paid tickets.

The vintage car collection can be enjoyed without a guided tour. Free audio guides, available in six languages, are distributed at the entrance to the exhibition hall. With a little bit of luck, smaller children receive a free toy car here too.

  • The French National Motor Museum in Mulhouse has over 400 cars on display and is an absolute must for vintage car enthusiasts. The closest airport to Mulhouse is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) with many low-cost flights to various destinations in Europe.
