Familia Hotel: Parisian Hospitality

An Apt Name Well Deserved for this Hotel in the Paris Latin Quarter

A Warm Welcome at the Hotel Familia , Martin Parker
The Familia Hotel's two stars are outshone by the care and attention showered upon hotel guests by Éric Gaucheron, his wife Sylvie and his parents Bernard and Colette.

About the Hotel

If the Familia Hotel looks grand from the outside with its elaborate balconies, Éric and his staff’s earnest wish is to welcome you as friends: enthusiastically. Beyond the hotel entrance, which was decorated by an artist friend, is the rich red breakfast/sitting room where the family's collection of leather-bound tomes and the thick Oriental rug give a homely feel.

The hotel’s simple atmosphere informs the bedrooms. The rooms and the small but adequate bathrooms have recently been renovated and it's all spotless. As this hotel is a typical Style Noble 1860s Haussmann building it has balconies on second, fifth and sixth floors. The adornment of the hotel's second-floor is absent in the other floors, but just look around you for examples.

The rooms are not large or `Parisian chic' but each has either a mural of a Paris monument (similar to those found in the Hotel Minerve next door, which Éric also runs), a wall of ancient stones, an old carved bed head or a balcony onto the fascinating street life - or a mixture of all this. Carpets, wallpapers, bedcovers and curtains seem somehow comfortingly provincial and solid, not brilliantly trendy or stunningly matched.

The front of the Familia Hotel faces across the wide street to a rich jumble of old buildings with the Ile Saint Louis just beyond.

Ask Éric anything - he will answer willingly, at length and in fast English.
