Paris at Christmas is a unique place, whether it's a service at Notre Dame Cathedral, a romantic Seine River cruise or ice-skating in front of the town hall.
The French capital at Christmas takes on a very special appearance, with merry-go-rounds and laughing children, twinkling lights on the Champs Elysees and the smell of roasting chestnuts from charcoal fires. Shopping for that special present is always high on a visitor’s list and there are a number of famous department stores in Paris to choose from. Well worth a visit are the Gallerie Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann and Printemps Department Store which boasts, “the largest beauty department in the world” also located on Boulevard Haussmann, not far from the Eiffel Tower. Seine River CruiseLeaving from Pont Neuf, with the bulk of Notre-Dame behind, the boat will cruise slowly along one of Europe’s most beautiful rivers taking the starry eyed visitor past illuminated monuments and under bridges festooned with Christmas lights. Add wonderful food and great music to the mix and the visitor is left with some unique Paris memories. Open Top Bus ToursAll the main Parisian landmarks can be seen from an open top bus tour. The Paris Grand Tour for example will take you from the Paris Opera House in a circuit which includes the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, Place de la Concorde, along the Champs Elysees around the Arc de Triomphe and past the Eiffel Tower. The tour can be joined at any of the 18 stops. Paris Walking ToursFor the energetic there are a number of Paris walking tours which allows a good look at some of the more unusual parts of the city and include: Medieval Paris, The Sewers and the Old Maraise Quarter. Many on holiday with children will spend a few days exploring the traditional sites, which take on a new magic at Christmas, before heading off to meet Mickey Mouse and friends at Disneyland Paris. Disneyland ParisFor both children and the young at heart Disneyland Paris is a wonderful experience. From 8 November until 6 January, Disney create a real Christmas atmosphere. Visitors can meet Santa Claus, visit Mickey’s Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty Castle and enjoy the snow that falls everyday on Main Street. How to get to Disneyland Paris, which is located 34 kilometres east of Paris. By car: From Paris on the Peripherique take the A4 motorway towards Metz and Nancy and take exit 13 after 31 kilometres and then exit 14 at 34 kilometres. From Charles-De-Gaulle airport follow the signs for Marne La Vallee until the A104 then the A4 towards Metz and Nancy coming off the motorway at exit 14.
