Standing proud over the arches of rue de Rivoli, looking straight through gold-tipped railings to the Tuileries, the Hôtel Brighton is a true turn-of-the-century Paris.

About the Hotel

The Hôtel Brighton, opposite the Tuileries Gardens, was named in the 1890s in celebration of the Entente Cordiale between staid Victorian England and giddy belle-époque France - funny thing, diplomacy.

The hotel epitomises the grandeur of the Parisian fin de siècle: mosaic floor, fluted columns and glittering chandeliers in a dining room that is soberly ivory and grey, full of arcaded light, soft-ginger monogrammed Philippe Starck chairs and no knick-knacks. Deep renovation on the hotel has recently been completed but, although the refurbished rooms are very fine, any room at the front of the hotel is worth having for the experience of belonging to that unbeatable view of central Paris, and the higher the better (Note that the hotel’s1st-floor rooms are under the arcades.)

Most rooms in the hotel are of a decent size. The renovated rooms are significantly larger, finely-corniced, cool-walled and warm-clothed, and some have an original fireplace or a vast mirrored armoire. All have superb bathrooms. The Hôtel Brighton’s older rooms have... older bathrooms (still perfectly adequate); some are prettily redecorated with sponged walls and plain carpets. Elsewhere, the hotel’s original décor is a reminder of the 1970s; often full of character, sometimes a little weary, but improvements come apace. And the hotel’s young manager, Jean-Louis Lebouc, is always kind and attentive.

Hotel Information

The hotel has 65 Rooms, some with air-conditioning. Prices range from €105 ($160/£80) for singles to €180 ($280/£138) for doubles and junior suites. A breakfast costs €7 ($11/£5) and meals are available on request for €15-30 ($23-46/£12-23). Small pets are permitted in the hotel. The hotel has an elevator and parking is available at Place Vendôme. Ask at reception about modem adapters.

The Louvre is a few minutes walk east from the Hôtel Brighton along rue de Rivoli and the Place de la Concorde and Grand Palais are both in the opposite direction.
